AN OKITENUGUI KABUTO [HELMET IN THE FORM OF A HEADCLOTH] AND A MENPO
Edo Period (17th Century)
The good quality bowl of typical form, the rivets with either zaboshi [chrysanthemum washers at the base] or with flower designs joining the plates or acting as decoration, iron nawa-fukurin [roped edging] to the peak and koshimaki, the six-lame Hineno-jikoro [close-fitting neck-guard] of kiritsuke-kozane [imitation lamellae] lacquered black on the outside and gold inside and laced with dark blue kebiki-odoshi [close lacing]. Together with a russet-iron ryubu-style mask, its surface decorated with yasurime [parallel engraved lines], copper teeth, a detachable nose with turning pegs, a four-lame yodarekake [throat defence] of black lacquered kiritsuke-kozane [imitation lamellae], the lower plate partly gilded with hair fringe (now missing), with dark blue sugake-odoshi [spaced lacing] (2)
