A KARURA SOMEN [FULL FACE MASK]
Edo Period (19th Century)
The extrordinary mask forged in one piece with the exception of the beak which is riveted on, extremely deeply embossed with eyebrows, wrinkles and whirls of hair on the chin, cheeks and brow, the teeth iron, the two upper canines gold lacquered, long well formed otayori-no-kugi [pegs beneath the chin], the eyes pierced with small holes, with signature Myochin Nobuie beneath the chin, the two-lame iron itamono yodarekake [solid-plate throat defence] attached to the mask by a strip of printed leather, black lacquered and with mauve sugake-odoshi [spaced lacing] and lavishly mounted with a design of peonies in gilded copper
