A PAIR OF ELEPHANT-TUSK FUTAMONO [LIDDED ORNAMENTS]
Signed Masamitsu, Meiji Period (Late 19th Century)
Each a naturally-curved tusk section, with Shibayama-style encrustation in ivory, shell and tortoiseshell, the decoration on each side of each tusk consisting respectively of an elaborate hanging vase with an arrangement of peonies, cherries and other flowers with two birds beneath; birds, butterflies and a peony with a bundle of straw; another elaborate arrangement of peonies, wistaria and cherry in a Chinese-style vase with a set of incense tools, a bird and butterflies; a duck, stone lantern and peonies; each tusk with a flat cover surmounted respectively by a finely- carved goat and an elephant; each also with a silver rim at the base and resting on a chrysanthemoid wood base which in turn rests on an elaborately carved five-legged wood stand; each tusk signed on the side on a shell plaque Masamitsu, slight old damage
