Tareyton is a signature image of Rivers'; the iconic brand of cigarettes evokes the long, smoke-filled nights spent by the Abstract Expressionists at the Cedar Tavern. Rivers uses the Pop art device of inserting a consumer brand name. Furthermore, he monumentalizes it as an important means of expression and a potent record of reality.
