Lot Essay

Although by 1852 manuscript Naval Listings (which had been prepared regularly since the eighteenth century) were by and large printed, the production of a very reduced number of manuscript lists was reserved for V.I.P's. The information contained within these examples is far more comprehensive than the printed copies and as so few were produced may be considered superior.

Admiral of the Fleet Lord John Hay, G.C.B. (1827-1916), the fourth son of the 8th Marquis of Tweeddale, was born in Geneva and entered the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1839. After seeing his first action in the China War of 1842, he then served with the Naval Brigade in the Crimea before being made Commodore of the East India Station from 1861-63. Promoted Rear-Admiral in 1872, he commanded the Channel Fleet, 1877-79 and, on behalf of the Crown, took possession of and administered the island of Cyprus in 1878. Commanded the prestigious Mediterranean Fleet, 1883-86, and was then Commander-in-Chief at Devonport, 1887-88, prior to being appointed Admiral of the Fleet. Also served several terms (1866-86) as a Lord of the Admiralty and upon relinquishing that position in 1886, was made G.C.B. the same year.
