A fine mid-19th Century pillar sextant and artificial horizon set by Thomas Jones
contained within two boxes: the latticed framed, oxcidised brass 8¼in. radius vernier sextant with inset silvered scale divided 5°- 0°- 155°, polished brass arc signed Thomas Jones 62 Charing Crofs London, vernier with clamp, tangent screw fine adjustment and swivel magnifier, sighting tubes, two mirrors, seven shades and rose wood handle with thread contained within fitted keystone box with accessories; Second box with cast brass sextant stand, tapering shaft to hinged counter-balance with lead weight and securing thread, artificial horizon with signed cover and mercury tray, metal container of mercury strapped to base, and a hand held dry card sighting compass with folding sights with 2½in. green coloured card signed, lacquered brass case with card clamp, all contained within a fitted box with drop handle -- 12 x 11½in.
