H.M.S. Victory: Flag and ensign fragments
three fragments each wrapped in a fold of paper separatley inscribed Nelsons Flag; Victory. Union Jack and Victory. Ensign; together with a French Prisoner-of-War straw work casket (later lock, old wear), the largest flag fragment -- 2in. (5cm.); the casket -- 5 x 7¾in. (12.5 x 19.5cm.)

As far as is known, the fragments have been contained within the casket since they were acquired by the family shortly after the Battle of Trafalgar

The National Maritime Museum have confirmed that these fragments conform closely to those which are held in the National Collection and which are alleged to have come from Victory/Trafalgar examples.

The flags flown aboard Victory at Trafalgar were dispersed after the battle although no clear records state which flag, where and to whom fragments were given it is known that the flags (Ensign, Jack and Admirals) have not survived. It is also known that at least one flag from the battle was used to cover Nelson's coffin for burial and that as soon as the coffin was buried, the seamen (all Trafalgar veterans) tore the flag(s) to shreds and distributed fragments to crew mates and dignitaries.
