Louisa was a 139-ton cutter owned by the Earl of Belfast, the first of a string of racing yachts with which he dominated the Royal Yacht Squadron's activities for almost a decade. Later the 3rd Marquess of Donegall, Lord Belfast was an influential early member of the R.Y.S. and enjoyed a not altogether friendly rivalry with Mr. Joseph Weld, another colourful personality and the owner of the notable 127-ton cutter Lulworth. Menai, 175-tons, the third cutter, was owned by Mr. T.A. Smith, Junior, and possible due to her significantly higher tonnage, was the winner of the Hundred Pound Cup race depicted here. It recorded however that all those present felt that the honours were really due to Louisa which came in less than four minutes behind Menai despite some serious damage suffered early in the race.
