Lot Essay

These magnificent schooners were built to take the weather on the Grand Banks and St. Georges but speed was also essential and they carried huge canvasses.

The scene shown here recalls the chapter in Kipling's Captain Courageous when having survived storm, ice and fog, one of the fleet was run down by a passing steamer - the sad fate of many a schooner.
