Lot Essay

A portrait of Granny Smith, the elderly gypsy woman who befriended the artist at Epsom and invited her to visit the romany camp at Iver. She appears in a number of paintings, including the impressive 'Gypsy Splendour' from 1939 (Nottingham Castle Museum) in which she also wears her black feathered hat and brightly decorated shawl.
