A rare pair of kid gloves, believed to have been worn by King Charles I, the gauntlet cuffs of black silk embroidered in black silk with pomegranates, peapods, pansies and fritillary - English, circa 1625 - in glazed case enclosing a letter dated Edlington, July 26 1675 from Peter Watkinson, ancestor of the vendor, offering them to his brother Dr. Watkinson, Chancelor (sic) of York. He states: '...I have made bold to present you by the Bearer my good Friend Mr. Robert Moore with a small token of my greater respect to you intreating you to accept of a payr of Gloves, & as you think fit to wear or keep ym. for his sake who is supposed sometimes to have worn them viz our late King. They were found the wardrobe of my Honourable Lady Wharton deceased , received by her from the old Countess of Monmouth (who was Governess to the late K in his minority) and by Mr. Wharton bestowed on me)'
