He served in the Army as a weapon training officer and then spent some years travelling to the Far East as a Purser with the Orient Line before returning to art. In 1964, he started painting birds full time and won instant recognition for his accuracy and detail. The same year Country Life published his best selling book Birds of Town and Village and he was honoured with an exhibition at the National Collection of Fine Arts of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., the first living artist to have his work shown there. He has had many one-man sell-out exhibitions at the Tryon Gallery, London, 1958/60/62/64/65/68 and 80. For seventeen years in the 1970's and 1980's, he was fully occupied in painting the wild birds of North America, a commission by industrialist Mr Jack Warner and under the patronage of HRH Prince Philip for the Warner Collection of Alabama, U.S.A. In 1991, the Warner Collection published the book Wild Birds of America - The Art of Basil Ede. In 1984, Basil was selected as Artist of the Year at the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in Charleston, South Carolina and in 1992 he received their first Lifetime Achievement Award for his Life-long contribution to Wildlife Art.
