Lowry visited Scotland in 1946 and 1947. During his visits he executed a series of working drawings of Princes Dock to depict the industrial life of Glasgow. The drawings were later worked into a group of oil paintings.
This work was the first painting by the artist to sell for in excess of £1,000 when it was purchased by the present owner in 1964.
