VOCABULARIUS EX QUO, in Latin and German. [Augsburg: Johann Froschauer, c.1496].
Chancery 4° (200 x 137mm). Collation: a8 b-i6 k8 l-m6 n-o8 p-q6 r8 s-t6 v8 x-y6 z8 (a1r title, a1v blank, a2r text, z7 blank, z8 woodcut, z8v blank). 152 leaves. 38 lines and headline. Type: 5:74G, 4:130G. Salvator mundi woodcut (99 x 65mm) on final recto. 5- to 7-line initial spaces with guide-letters. (Lightly browned, some light dampstaining, repaired marginal tear on final leaf, small internal tear on title.) Modern vellum-backed patterned paper boards, modern green morocco-backed solander box. Provenance: [Lathrop Harper, cat. 155, 1928, no. 401] -- [Dr. Hans Deckel (collection dispersed by Antiquariat Wölfle, Munich)] -- George Abrams (booklabel, notes on flyleaf, sale Sotheby's, 17 November 1989, lot 129).
ONE OF ONLY FIVE RECORDED COPIES AND THE ONLY ONE RETAINING THE FINAL LEAF WITH WOODCUT. All of the other four known copies are in Bavarian libraries: Augsburg, Munich, Neuburg and Ottobeuren. A tall copy, retaining many deckle edges. Dated to c.1494 in Goff, it is more likely to have been printed c.1496. Froschauer began printing at Augsburg in 1494, and used the Salvator Mundi woodcut in 4 other books, one of which is dated 1496.
