Collation: π4 a-e8 f-s4 t-y8 z12 A-C8 D12 (π1r title, π1v woodcut of an astronomer, π2r part I, f1 part II, s1 part III, A1 part IV, D10v register, colophon, D11-12 blank). 174 (of 176, without final two blank) leaves. 44 lines and headline. Type: 4:156G, 3:66G. 420 woodcuts, some with touches of colour, Giunta device (Kristeller 216) on title, printer's device (Kristeller 306) at end, woodcut historiated initials. (Small marginal wormhole, very light dampstain at upper margin, tears at hinge of first leaf.) 18th-century vellum, title lettered along spine, lightly speckled edges. Provenance: Giacomo Soranzo (inscription dated 1729 on flyleaf).
SECOND EDITION of 'an important astrological work' (Stillwell, Awakening I, 51). The Astrolabium provides descriptions of each sign of the zodiac, discussing it in light of ascendancy and conjunction with the sun, moon, and Venus. The woodcuts, depicting the type of people and their possible occupations born under certain auspices, are based on those in Ratdolt's Augsburg edition of 1488, of which this is a close reprint.
