Type: 5:111Rb. 2- to 6-line initial spaces. (Short slit at inner margin of first two quires, partly repaired in the first.) Late 17th-century sheep-backed marbled boards (upper cover detached, somewhat worn, particularly at spine). Provenance: Fenonus Eustachius (inscription on first leaf) -- early marginal annotations in several hands -- Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun (1655-1716, signature on final blank and on rear pastedown).
SECOND EDITION of the extant works of 'the outstanding historian and the principal prose writer of the Silver Age of Latin letters' (PMM). FIRST EDITION of his biography of his father-in-law, the great Roman general, Agricola, under whose leadership the Roman conquest of Britain was completed. The Julii Agricolae vita therefore contains an important early historical description of Roman Britain. After having worked as foreman at the first press at Milan, established by Pamfilo Castaldi, Zarotus set up his own press -- the third at Milan -- in partnership with Gabriel de Orsonibus and others in 1472.
