2° (279 x 187mm). With blank leaves π1 and c4 present. Engraved title by Simon van de Passe, woodcut headpieces and historiated initials. Second issue, with e3 cancelled and the page contents reprinted on e4r, adding errata and omitting the name of Bill Norton from the colophon. 18th-century blind-ruled calf, red sprinkled edges (corners slightly bumped).

A FINE, FRESH COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE. The Instauratio magna was conceived as a work in six parts, of which only De Augmentis Scientiarum, an expanded version of The Advancement of Learning, and the Novum Organum were completed. The Novum Organum sets out Bacon's new philosophy and scientific method, arguing for a search not for truth but for 'a true knowledge of the universe'. He outlines a new method of acquiring knowledge of the world through observation, experiment and inductive reasoning, which he envisioned as a tool for the 'total reconstruction of sciences, arts and all human knowledge ... to extend the power and dominion of the human race ... over the universe.'
