Le Grand Theatre sacré du Duché de Brabant. The Hague: Gerard Block, 1734.
4 parts in 2 volumes, 2° (464 x 285 mm). Half-title, title with monogram device to each part, the first printed in red and black, engraved folding map in each volume, and 296 engraved plates, of which 78 are double-page, 32 are printed 2 to 4 plates per leaf, and 5 are text engravings by J. and Frans Harrewijn, J.B. Jongelinx, D. Coster, R. Blokhuysen, P. De Doncker, Krafft, and others. (Very occasional light spotting, offsetting onto a few plates.) Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine with red leather label, sprinkled edges (some flaking of mottling, slight wear at corners).
A fine, large copy of the second edition of the Grand Theatre, describing and depicting in engraved plates the religious architecture of Brabant. As stated in the preface, Brabant is renowned for its churches, abbeys, and monasteries, and the work presents their history from their foundation, together with engravings (prepared 'at great expense'), illustrating them both in panoramic views and in detail. Portraits of famous people associated with them are also included, as are numerous sepulchral tombs and other decorative detail. The work is often ascribed to either Jacques LeRoy or to Antonius Sanderus, however the Bibliotheca Belgica lays these misattributions to rest, noting that, while it depends on Sanderus as a source to some extent in the first 11 books, the work is more indebted to the Groot Kerkelyk toneel des hertogdoms van Brabant. Bib. Belgica, T-58; Brunet II, 1699. (2)
