HORAE, use of Rome. Paris: Gilles and Germain Hardouin, [c.1513, almanac for 1513-1530].
PRINTED ON VELLUM. 8° (173 x 110mm). Roman type, printed in black and red. 88 leaves (of 108). 5 (of 15?) full-page metalcuts and 6 smaller metalcuts COLOURED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND, full-page printer's device at end, ornamental and historiated borders, initials and line-filler in liquid gold on pink or blue ground, yellow capital strokes. Engraving by Peter Overradt after Dürer mounted on front pastedown. (Some rubbing, a few borders shaved.) CONTEMPORARY MORELLO VELVET over pasteboard (worn, lacking backstrip but spine intact). Provenance: additional prayers written in a contemporary hand at end -- full-page painted armorial on first vellum leaf -- Comte de Montalembert (armorial bookplate, stamps) -- MAG (20th-century bookplate).
This edition is very closely related to Brunet V, 1636, although there are slight differences in the colophon. The cuts belong to the Hardouins' 8vo series (cf. Davies, Murray German, p.319).
