Woodcut title border with figures representing the four continents and Zenaro's device at foot, one woodcut vignette on c8r, 2 sectional titles within woodcut borders, and 418 full-page woodcuts by Christoph Krieger after Vecellio, most within elaborate borders. Woodcut typographical ornaments and initials. (Restoration to lower margin of title slightly affecting border and imprint, title also slightly short at lower margin and possibly supplied from another copy, several preliminaries creased at corners, U2 with lower blank corner torn away, a few quires lightly browned, light marginal waterstains at end, without final blank.) Modern calf, red speckled edges (upper joints slightly split). Provenance: John L. Nevinson (signature in pencil dated July 1954 and bookplate).

FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST ILLUSTRATED ITALIAN COSTUME BOOK. Vecellio includes 354 figures in European costume and 5 views of Venice in the first part, while the second illustrates 59 examples of Asian and African dress. The figures, occuring one to a page with descriptive text opposite, are within a series of woodcut borders made up of four blocks. Christoph Krieger of Nuremberg is acknowledged as the woodblock cutter in the description of a Bolognese lady on 2B8r.
