IRELAND, Samuel William Henry (1777-1835). The Life of Napoleon Bonaparte. London: John Fairburn [and John Cumberland], 1823-1828.
4 volumes, 8° (217 x 124mm). Half-titles in volumes I-II, 4 engraved titles, Fairburn's letterpress titles in volumes I-III. 27 plates by George Cruikshank, all folding, comprising 26 aquatints, all hand-coloured excep two plates, and one uncoloured line-engraving. (Some spotting of plates and text, slight creasing to some plates, one plate in vol. IV mounted on linen.) Green morocco gilt by Rivière, sides and spines tooled with Napoleonic emblems, spines directly-lettered in gilt, gilt turn-ins and edges (slight cracking of joints), cloth slipcase.
FIRST EDITION, issued in 64 parts, volumes I-III (1823-1827) under Fairburn's imprint and volume IV (1828) by Cumberland who inset his engraved titles (all dated 1828) with the printed titles of Fairburn. Abbey observes that 'The Fairburn venture must have been unsuccessful, for sets carrying his imprints are very unusual, and examples of the three printed titles definitely rare.' This copy appears to be in mixed states, the chapter summaries in volumes II-IV being shorter than those in volume I, and the duplication of pp. 110 to 115 in volume III being indicated by stars. Abbey Life 359; Tooley 278. (4)
