CUSTOMS AND EXCISE -- ORDERS IN COUNCIL. A collection of 118 Orders of the Custom House Commissioners, London: 1786-1794.
Bound in one volume, 2° (133 x 210mm). Each Order numbered and headed in manuscript. With a contemporary manuscript index in 2 parts, 8pp. and 6pp., bound in. (Stab marks at inner margins.) Uncut in contemporary drab boards (worn, backstrip perished). Provenance: R.E. The general subject of these 'Orders in Council' is trade and shipping embargos. Nos. 1-11, 30 and 57 relate specifically to the Americas. No. 47, dated 6 November, 1793, concerns the quarantine of 'all ships, persons, & merchandise, from any of the ports of Pensylvania, Delaware, or New Jersey,' while no. 55, dated 12 February 1794, revokes the quarantine. Some Orders affect Newfoundland and the Newfoundland fishery (see nos. 54, 72, 92, 97 and 100), while several relate to the whale fishery. Others concern 'the West-India trade' (nos. 20 and 93), the Cocos Islands (38), St. Domingo (no. 51), Martinique (59), and St. Lucia and Guadaloupe (60).
