2° (455 x 295mm). Engraved title, arms of Philip IV of Spain on verso, woodcut printer's device on final leaf, 39 double-page engraved maps including the 4 sheet Peutinger tabula, 3 double-page engraved views and 2 plates 'Ordines Sacri Romani', woodcut initials and numerous illustrations of coins. (Light spotting to first few leaves, margins of later leaves affected by several wormholes.) Contemporary mottled calf, covers with gilt-ruled borders, joints slightly cracked, red speckled edges. Provenance: C. St and R.Marsh (armorial bookplates).

The final edition of the Parergon, Ortelius's atlas of ancient Geography. This is one of the few separately published editions, based on the maps drawn up by Ortelius between 1575 and 1598, which were included in the later editions of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarun. Unlike most of Ortelius's work, which was copied from other sources, the Parergon is entirely Ortelius's creation, drawing both the maps and writing the text, and even using his own coin collection as models for the portraits in the maps and for the woodcuts in the text. It clearly shows his enthusiasm and knowledge of classical geography. Koeman III Ort 46; Phillips Atlases 5643.
