NEWTON'S New & Improved Terrestrial Pocket Globe No66 Chancery Lane, London
A 3-inch (7.6cm.) diameter terrestrial pocket globe made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores, the equatorial graduated in degrees, the meridian of Greenwich ungraduated, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with sigils, the oceans with an analemma and a note beneath reading NB The Improved Analemma is intended to supercede the necessity of the Ecliptic Line hitherto unecessarily drawn upon the Terrestrial Globe Pub. Jan. 1. 1817, also with the tracks of Cook, Gore and Clark [sic] and the Antipodes of London, no Antarctic coastline shown but with notes to Cook's tracks Isles of Ice and Ice (x2), the continents shaded in pink, green and yellow and showing rivers, national boundaries, cities and the Great Wall of China, Canada and Greenland with no northern coastline, the west coast of Canada showing Vancouver Disc.d, Alaska labelled Russian Settlements, Central America labelled NEW SPAIN (abrasions to varnish and some varnish loss and discolouration), with iron axis pins, in the original red-rimmed spherical fishskin-covered case, the interior laid with twelve celestial gores separating around the equinoctial colure, the cartouche NEWTON'S Improved Pocket CELESTIAL GLOBE, the equatorial hand-coloured in yellow and graduated in degrees and hours, the equinoctial colure in yellow, the solstitial colure in red and both graduated in degrees, the ecliptic in red and graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with sigils, the constellations depicted by mythical beasts and figures and scientific instruments and labelled in Latin, the stars to several magnitudes with no key and many labelled with Greek letters, the case with one brass hook and two eyes (one hook missing)

In the light of further research, in our opinion the celestial gores laid to the interior of the case are in fact original. In addition, subsequent to cataloguing the missing hook from the case has been replaced, and the sphere has been revarnished with a thin layer of matt varnish, removing the catalogued blemishes.
