Lot Essay

It is not surprising to discover that the present painting was once owned by the celebrated patrons and collectors Leo & Gertrude Stein. Intially, there were more Matisses than Picassos on the walls of the Stein appartment in the rue de Fleurus, as Michael Stein and his wife Sarah had collected Matisse's work as early as 1902. Always eloquent and composed, Matisse was a welcome guest whom the Steins were proud to introduce their american friends.

Wanda de Guébriant has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work in a letter dated Paris, le 8 June 1988 stating that it is registered in the Henri Matisse archives under the number PZ245.
