Lot Essay

Dufy visited Martigues firstly in 1903 and again in 1904 when he was accompanied by his fellow artist Friesz. Martigues is a small town near Marseilles on the coast. This area of France captured his fascination for light and colour and the Autumn so much so that he returned at the height of the Fauvist movement in 1907 to paint his celebrated picture 'Barques aux Martigues'.
