Lot Essay

A similar composition entitled, Sailboats at Benet's Abbey is illustrated in J.W. Reid, Edward Seago The Landscape Art, London, 1991, p. 32, pl. 27.

Situated near Ludham, close to the River Bure, St. Benet's Abbey was founded by King Canute in 1020 A.D. It fell into decay after the dissolution of the monasteries.
