Christopher Neve (loc. cit.) writes that Lifesection is, 'a group that will work either way up as representing a number of figures, both elevating and trampling two others. The sensation is very strong both of compression and expansion with the human spring in the middle retaining the stasis, but it also vividly evokes both a picture of society in general as well as the ups and downs of an individual psyche within it. The elation of the uppermost figure and the hopeless depression of the lower are instantly identifiable'.
