Lawrence Ives describes how his father visited Lowry on an errand in the evening of 25 October 1972. Lowry asked him if he had one of his drawings and offered him a choice of three works: Saturday Morning in Stalybridge, a woman pushing a pram and a sharply drawn lane. When Mr Ives selected the drawing of Stalybridge, Lowry asked,
'Are you an artist, Sir?'
Mr Ives replied in the negative.
'Well anyway, you've picked the best one of the bunch!'
