Lot Essay

This drawing was among the group of twelve heads given by the artist to Frank Whalley in 1975. Most of this group, including this drawing, were exhibited at the Southampton Art Gallery 1977 exhibition, the catalogue for which includes an introduction by Frank Whalley.

Lawrence Ives acquired the present work from Frank Whalley in 1982 in exchange for House by Trevor Grimshaw and Brothel Scene by Christopher Wood.
