The present composition dates from 1933, the year of Seago's first visit to Venice. During this visit he stayed at a villa on the Giudecca rented by Lord and Lady Melchett who were important early patrons. He painted a small number of dark, atmospheric waterscapes influenced by Whistler's Nocturnes (see J. Goodman, Edward Seago, London, 1978, pp. 101-2).
