Mel Gooding (Patrick Heron, London, 1994, p. 162) comments on Heron's paintings from the early 1960s: 'Although individual works will continue to contradict any generalization about work at this time, a trend to greater simplicity is nevertheless clearly discernable, with the colour shapes decreasing in number, or assuming the more definite outlines of pictorial forms or figures, and the colour areas within which they are placed becoming more unified in texture and uniform in colour'.
