Lot Essay

The plaster for this bronze was given by Rodin to Léon Deschamp, a journalist friend of Rodin and editor of La Plume. It passed by family descent to the present owner who obtained the right from the Musée Rodin to cast an original edition of 8 bronzes from the original plaster.

Until 1987 the work was unknown to the Musée Rodin except for documentary evidence. There is a letter in the archive of the Musée Rodin from Deschamp thanking Rodin for the piece: "Jamais votre art ne fût mieux synthétisé que ce morceau sublîme et ce m'est une orgeuilleuse joie d'y voir mon nom tracé sur le socle, au dessus de votre signature".

Another example of this edition of the sculpture is housed in the Musée Rodin, Paris.
