NOTE:
Zhang Daqian held an exhibition in Chengdu, Sichuan, between 20th-23rd October, 1944, where almost one hundred of his works were shown. Four paintings, which form a set of meticulously drawn ladies in various pursuit, were the highlight and won the most admiration from the audiance. This set of figure paintings was priced at 600,000 dollars (guobi) at the time, which was the highest for any painting on offer at this exhibition.
Zhang had always considered this set of four figure paintings, of ladies in bright vivid colours, the best figure paintings he has ever painted, a view which is generally accepted and shared. The four paintings are entitled respectively:
Anle tu (Musical Performance), Chundeng tu (Spring Lantern Festival), Cailian tu (Picking Lotus), and Dushu tu (Reading)
The four paintings were executed one or two years before the end of the Second World War. Zhang was still fully under the influence of the mural paintings of Dunhuang, and his figure paintings of this period probably have the greatest variety yet each retaining a special individuality. This was also the time when Zhang's figure paintings received the most attention, and accolade, from the public. The set of four figures is acknowledged as most representative of Zhang in this, his middle, period.
According to Mr. Gao Lingmei, "Everyone at the Chengdu exhibition praised the set of four ladies, and all wanted to buy it. However, Zhang had said that they were not in fact for sale. After the exhibition, Zhang made a gift of Spring Lantern Festival to Mr. Zhang Qun, and Musical Performance was given to me (Gao) as a red packet for Chinese New Year. These two paintings are treasured by their owners until now...."
Rumour has it that the other two paintings, Picking Lotus and Reading, are in the Sichuan Museum and private ownership in Taiwan respectively. (see Xie Jiaxiao Zhang Daqian di Shijie (The World of Zhang Daqian), [ publisher ??????Date}, p.348)
