Lot Essay

From the early 1930's, Moholy-Nagy painted on synthetic materials, such as rhodoid and galalith. He was attracted by any technical innovation and had been trying to divest himself of traditional materials even when he still clung to the form of easel painting.

'Tp3' retains the characteristic dynamism of earlier pictures, such as 'The Great Aluminium Picture (AL II)' of 1926 in the play of intersecting diagonal lines, and is comparable to 'Composition Tp5' of 1930 from the collection of the late Max Bill.
