Rewi Alley, a native of New Zealand, spent a large part of his life in China (from 1927 to 1987). Collecting Chinese art was one of his passions, when not devoting himself to working alongside the Chinese in bettering their general social conditions. His collection of Chinese art is housed in the Rewi Alley Colection in the Canterbury Museum, and the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, New Zealand.
