Lot Essay

Although Lecombre dates the present lot in 1927, it is stylistically very comparable to a lavastone head from 1931 (op.cit. Lecombre, no.244). Moreover, this lot seems to be inspired by the Greek archaïch style and other sculpture fragments of the antiquity Zadkine must have seen during a trip to Greece in 1931. The firm lines of the nose in combination with a sharp transition to a relief like detailing of the hair are typical for the period around 1931.
