Lot Essay

The present lot is one of Jan Toorop's earliest oil picture recorded. Please compare this lot with a picture of a mill painted on a doorpanel as decoration for the house of Dr Masthoff, Delft. See: R. Siebelhoff, The early development of Jan Toorop 1879-1892, Toronto 1973, Vol. III (unpublished thesis) p. 179, no. P7903

Will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist's work, currently being prepared by G.W.C. van Wezel.
