Lot Essay

The seal Bairyu was used by the Edo school master Tokoku and is usually on a inlaid metal plaque. This netsuke is typical of his work and it is very similar to another signed Meikei Hojitsu1, whose work inspired Tokoku2.

1 For a very similar example signed Meikei Hojitsu, see Raymond Bushell (adapted from the Japanese by), The netsuke Handbook of Ueda Reikichi (Tokyo, 1961), no. 182, p. 180.
