A rare Merrythought 'Punkinhead'
with brown mohair, velvet muzzle, black stitched nose and mouth, large clear and black glass eyes painted white on reverse, golden mohair inner ear and chest, long white mohair on scalp, swivel neck, jointed limbs, velvet feet and brown felt pads, dressed in original yellow felt shorts, with yellow label on foot --19in. (48cm.) high, circa 1951 (some overall wear, repair to top of foot with 6in. x ½in. patch, some balding to scalp)

Lot Essay

Punkinhead was made exclusively as the mascot for Eaton's Department store in Toronto, Canada. He became the hero of several storybooks, as well as the leader of the annual Santa Claus parade. He appeared in the 1951 catalogue, and this size would originally have cost $9.95c.
