Autograph letter, signed 'Your affect: brother Bertie', from Buckingham Palace, 4 May 1856, 3pp, 8°, to 'Affie', confirming safe delivery of the flowers he sent and hoping he received his latest parcel containing a 'minie ball, a cap and a cross', also concerned about his finger, having injured it with a cricket ball and says he can dictate a letter back if he can not write. The Prince describes a visit to the Polytechnic Institution where he was presented with a basket made by a blind man, which he has enclosed as a gift (creased on folds), with original envelope addressed to 'H.R.H. Prince Alfred, Royal Lodge, Windsor Park' and initialled 'A.E.' (rubbed).

Edward's younger brother, Prince Alfred Ernest Albert, was born in 1844 at Windsor Castle. He later married Marie Alexandrovna, daughter of Alexander II, Tsar of Russia.
