EDWARD FITZGERALD (1809-1893)
Autograph letter, signed 'Edward Fitzgerald', n.p., n.d., 3pp, 12°, to an unknown recipient, describing an accident he had whilst lodging in the recipient's rooms, 'I fell asleep over my book one night, and my candle took the opportunity of tumbling over, and slightly burning both your tablecloth and a volume of notes'. However, no great damage was done and as he 'should be sorry to leave your rooms without apologising to you for the accident - I trust you will forgive me; and accept a little volume of Scott which I leave behind as a remembrance of your unthrifty tenant' (slightly spotted, wax seal stains to corners), inserted into a copy of The Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart., (London, Charles Daly, n.d.).

Lot Essay

This delightful letter is typical of Fitzgerald, the country gentleman scholar educated at King Edward VI School in Bury St. Edmunds and Trinity, Cambridge. Whilst at Cambridge he developed literary friendships with Thackeray, Carlisle and Tennyson. As a poet he is perhaps best known for his translation of Omar Khayyam.
