Lot Essay

On 7 April 1895, the Norwegian Arctic explorer's expedition to the North Pole reached the highest latitude until then attained. By letting his ship, the Fran, become frozen in the ice, he was able to drift with the current Northwards, completing his journey across the ice on foot. He was the first Norwegian ambassador in London (1906-1908) and in 1922 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for Russian relief work.
