Lot Essay

Gérard Christophe Michel Duroc (1772-1813) became Napoleon's aide-de-camp in 1795 and distinguished himself in several campaigns in Italy and Egypt. His devotion to Napoleon was rewarded by complete confidence and he was created General of Brigade in 1800 and governor of the Tuilleries. This involved being responsible for the Emperor's personal safety wherever he went and also directing the smallest details of the Imperial household. He was mortally wounded at the battle of Bautzen in 1813 whilst in attendance to Napoleon.
Napoleon's confidence in Duroc's organisational skills is evident in this unusual letter. The animals were obviously destined for his menagerie at Malmaison.
