Lot Essay

Antoine Drouot (1774-1847) was the son of a baker, nicknamed by Napoleon 'le Sage de la grande armée'. He was a brilliant artillery officer who rose from the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in 1794 to that of general in 1813, playing a particularly glorious role in the battles of Wagram and Moscow and in the campaigns of 1813. He followed Napoleon to Elba and was created governor. He reluctantly returned to France in 1815 and was present at Waterloo, dying in his home town of Nancy, after a long provincial obscurity notable for his active membership of the Société d'Agriculture.
