EZRA LOOMIS POUND (1885-1972)
Typed airmail letter with various autograph amendments in red ink, signed 'Ez', postmarked Washington D.C., 28 March [19]58, 1½pp, 4°, to Denis Goacher ('Yiss, me DJinnis'), in idiosyncratic Pound style and spelling, 'yu CAN go to the MOUSEeum/and see if they cattergog "Three Plays of the Social Comedy"' he writes, 'The old carrot Shaw HAD a copy/...Mine lost in the coNFusion of falling Roma/...', continuing by mentioning other writers and complaining of the lack of distinguished English graduates which could have been remedied 'simply by having Ez on premises in one of the kennels reserved for 7th rate american candidates...What lacks at moment for uplidt and OUTlift is SPECIFIC invites to Ez/to be present somewhere. On the ole prinCIple: Professer people w/d have LIKED to ask yu to dinner, but they didn't know what you would DO', blaming 'the shit of Clivedens and Maxwells and Cole Snorters' for his loss of freedom. 'Eliot's idea of reality is so LIMITED', he continues, 'Congrats on entering the TLS peosy columns. I don't suppose they want ME?' (creased on folds).
With a typed letter, heavily annotated in biro, from Pound's wife Dorothy, 9pp [of 10], 4°, from Brunnenburg, 5 March 1964, to Denis [Goacher], a long chatty letter about friends and acquaintances, their work and the work of others, including views on Yeats 'I'm afraid Yeat's Irish accent would have put me off had I met him. And that high upper lip - an unattractive feature', and speaks at length of Ezra's poetry, describing his 'geiger-counter-like sensitivity to language' but that she would 'no longer give Ezra as a guide to anyone', ending by warning him not to repeat anything she has written (creased on folds, lightly frayed).
