[SCIENTISTS] A collection of autograph letters and letters signed by various 19th century scientists, including:
JOSEPH NORMAN LOCKYER, letter, signed 'J. Norman Lockyer', from Westgate on Sea, 16 December [1899?], 2pp, 8°, to Robertson Smith, regarding an article he is writing about the Star of Bethlehem, 'The present star is Venus and I begin to think that it must have been Venus then', making a joke of the fact that the local gardeners believe the world will end next month (presumably written at the turn of the 19th century).
CHARLES LYELL, one-page autograph letter, signed 'Cha. Lyell', [n.p.], Tuesday 30 September 1851, 8°, to 'My dear Owen', making arrangements to take some visitors to the Museum of the College of Surgeons (creased on folds).
JOHN TYNDALL, autograph letter, signed 'John Tyndall', from Evolena, 3 August 1867, 2pp, 4°, to Mrs Stuart, giving a detailed and interesting account of his recent trip to the Alps (creased and slightly worn on folds).
With other letters from T.H. Huxley, Joseph Dalton Hooker, William Ramsay, Herbert Spencer, William Jenner, and including an amusing autograph postcard depicting a frog, written in verse by the zoologist John Murray.
