Details
GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (1856-1950)
Autograph letter, signed 'G. Bernard Shaw', from The Victoria Hotel, Holkham, Norfolk, 24 July 1902, 2pp, 4°, to M.E. Lange, regarding Lange's forthcoming election as a Liberal candidate, 'I should advise you strongly not to begin campaigning until the Education Bill is done with, and to leave that and Home Rule and the South African war carefully alone...thoroughly master the rent question and the rate question and the question of municipal trading'. He advises him to drop 'Gladstonism' entirely and take up the difficulties of the St. Pancras shopkeeper, 'then you might waken the place up a bit', and recommends a Fabian Society book by Sidney Webb. However, Shaw urges him to take his own line for 'all advice...will be bad advice...I hope you will excuse my offering you these suggestions' (creased on folds, some holes to margins).
