John Lucas (1807-1874) built up an enormously successful practice as a fashionable portrait painter and engraver. His portrait of Wellington depicts him in the uniform of the Master of Trinity House, standing by a table covered with plans, and the subsequent engraving was published in 1841 (British Museum Catalogue of Engraved British Portraits, VI, 1925, no. 174).
