This appears to be the preliminary study for the portrait in the Royal Collection (Miller & Dawney Plate 381 and J. Spencer-Smith No.31). The latter authority notes that some confusion exists over the rank of the sitter, who is referred to by Drahonet as Sergeant Boast, but who was not officially promoted to that rank until some months after the portrait was painted.
